Common K-Pop Slang

As a fellow k-popper and Korean, I realize that there are a LOT of terms that people learn while following their favorite groups and artists. Here are the basic terms down below to help you better understand some of the terms that they may use in variety shows and interviews!

This is also a small intro into learning the Korean language, but I will have more posts about learning Korean soon!

Stan - an avid fan and supporter of a group or artist

Antis- short for anti-fans, these people are against the group/member that you oh-so-dearly love.

Bias - Your favorite member of a group

Ultimate bias - Your favorite person in k-pop, regardless of the group

Bias Wrecker - Someone who threatens the rank of your bias in your heart

Fandom - Describes everyone who loves that specific group (i.e: the BTS fandom is huge!)

Fanservice - Something an artist will do to please the fans (i.e: revealing their abs, dancing a special dance)

Fighting!/Hwaiting! (화이팅) - means "You can do it!"

Dongsaeng (동생) - What any older girl or guy will call someone younger than them

Oppa (오빠) - What younger girls call older guys.

Hyung (형) - What younger guys call another guy who is older than them.

Noona (누나) - What younger guys call older girls.

Unnie (언니) - What younger girls call another girl who is older than them.

Sunbae (선배) - People who have more experience in a specific field that you are in (i.e: business, music, etc) and have been around longer

than you; a word used to show respect

Hoobae (후배) - People who have less experience in a specific field that you are in (i.e: business, music, etc) and have been around for a

shorter period of time than you

Saranghae (사랑해) - The korean version of "I love you".

Daebak (대박)- Often said when something is really great or awesome. (i.e: I won the lottery! Daebak!)

Jjang (짱) - Korean slang for "the best"

Maknae (막내) - The youngest of the group

Netizen - Short for a citizen of the internet

OTP - Short for One True Pairing. Used to describe the couple that you really ship/like the best.

OST - Short for Original Sound Track. Often used to describe the title song/background music of a drama.

Rookie - Someone/A group that has just debuted.

Sangnamja (상남자) - A Korean word used to describe a tough guy.

Sasaeng (사생) - A crazy fan who will do anything to see/be with their bias.

Selca (셀카) - Selfie in Korean.

Ship - When you want two celebrities to become a couple. (i.e: OMG I totally ship Song Hye Kyo and Song Joongki!)

Teaser - A short clip of the music video that groups release before their music video to excite the fans.

M/V - Short for music video.

Ulzzang (얼짱) - Is slang for "best face" in Korean, and is used to describe someone who posses large eyes, smooth skin, and doll like

features.

Trainee - Someone that is currently preparing to debut under a company. These pre-debut idols spend hours practicing and perfecting their stage skills and talents.

Wae (왜) - The Korean version of "why".

Yeobo (여보) - What people in a relationship will often call each other; very lovey-dovey.

Aegyo (애교) - Acting cute, often with phrases like "I had a scary dream last night!".
